Aviassist is proud of our passionate and professional team. Mark Goolmer is a commercial RPAS instructor and piloted Helicopter Pilot/Instructor. Mark has 40 years aviation experience including 19 as a pilot for the Westpac rescue helicopter service. Mark has also completed Aerial Survey and Mapping training with Remote Results. Based in Newcastle, Mark leads RPAS training in New South Wales.
With 40 years’ experience as a commercial helicopter pilot, Mark brings extensive aviation experience to the team at Aviassist. Before working with Aviassist, he spent the last 19 years of his career working with the Westpac Rescue Service in Newcastle. Prior to this, his career included instructing, photographic and film production work and assisting with waterbombing in firefighting efforts.
Even earlier than that, he flew hang gliders and ultralight aircraft, and to top it off; also holds a private pilot licence for airplanes.
Interest in Drones and RPAS training
Mark is a keen photographer and this is what initially sparked his interest in drones. Owning his own drone, his skills and knowledge of RPAS developed and lead him to work in a commercial capacity performing mapping, surveying and commercial storm damage assessment.
Mark’s comprehensive aviation experience, his understanding of the capabilities of RPAS and his impressive skills to utilise the technology meant he was a perfect fit for the Aviassist team.
Favourite subject to train
Aerodynamics- the Principles of Flight is a favourite for Mark as he enjoys that students find it fascinating and often have limited prior exposure to the concepts. Connecting the information to a relevant context, to make purposeful links, makes this a meaningful subject for Mark.
Most rewarding aspect of working at Aviassist
Mark says the most rewarding aspect of working at Aviassist is seeing the students at the end of the week completing their course, and being able to shake their hand to welcome them to the world of professional aviation. He feels a sense of satisfaction seeing the growth and learning that occurs over the course and seeing the smile on the students’ faces when they have accomplished their goal. He says he “gets a kick out of that sort of thing” and that’s what drives him to deliver expert training courses.
Further developments in drone applications
Mark is most looking forward to advances in battery technology as he observes that the battery will be the thing that limits all aircraft evolving. Currently, batteries have had to be engineered small enough and light enough for it to be fitted into the aircrafts we can currently operate, so where to from here?
